Quick Horror Movie Review – Dead Alive

Dead Alive

Lionel Cosgrove: They’re not dead exactly, they’re just… sort of rotting.

Like the New Zealander version of Evil Dead 2 with the camp and gore cranked up beyond what you thought a movie was capable of.  I honestly felt that the campy silliness of it all got pretty tired pretty quickly, but it impressive on the scale and audacity of the special effects.

Quick Horror Movie Review – [rec] 2

Dr. Owen: I have to complete the mission.

An interesting follow up to a halfway decent zombie film, with a nice turn on traditional stories that is totally let down by the follow through.  Poorly written, badly inconsistent, and unwilling to do much to innovate the scares of the first movie.

Sergio: What happened to her eyes?

Nothing you haven’t seen before (fast zombies! shakey cam!), but it does a great job of keeping the tension high and the zombies properly threatening.  At 75 minutes though, the film is criminally brief, and it’s difficult to muster any concern for flat characters who’re dead 5 minutes after they’re introduced.

Quick Movie Review – Shaun of the Dead

It’s October, and that means horror movie reviews!

Shaun of the Dead

Dianne: Just look at the face: it’s vacant, with a hint of sadness. Like a drunk who’s lost a bet.

A great subversion of the Romero zombie films, and everyone in the cast pretty much nails their roles.  I did find the Ed character to be unlikeable and obnoxious, and I wish they had written in jokes with a greater density, but it’s a solid film.
